Laparoscopy Removal of Hernia

We have always come across people complaining about the pain in the abdomen due to a hernia, mostly from people who are aged. When we cross that boundary of youthfulness to middle age, then it is time to worry about a hernia. As age catches up the process of building up and breaking down of muscles and tissues go out of balance. As a result of this imbalance, the muscles or tissues weaken causing weak spots in the area. A hernia occurs when organs push through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds its place.

Causes for the occurrence of Hernia

Many reasons can be cited for the occurrence of a hernia.
1) Aging.
2)  Lifting heavy weight.
3) Obesity.
4) Persistent coughing and sneezing.
5) Constipation.
6) Heredity.
Apart from natural causes, Damage from injuries or surgery can also result in the occurrence of a hernia.

Types and symptoms

The most common types of a hernia are:
1) An inguinal hernia which affects the intestine. This condition accounts for most of the cases of a hernia.
2) The other types which are not very common include an incisional hernia, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia and hiatal hernia.

Treatment of a hernia

The doctor before going for the surgery monitors a hernia and suggests lifestyle changes to reduce weight and advises the patient to quit smoking. The patient is also advised to remove spicy food from his diet. If the symptoms don’t recede then the patient might need a surgery.

Laparoscopic treatment to remove a hernia

Laparoscopy is more preferred than open surgery as it uses modern technology. It is easy to handle, less damaging and the recovery time is also less. In laparoscopy, a small incision is made to insert the equipment, a tiny high-resolution camera and miniaturized surgical equipment to repair a hernia. Still some types of a hernia will require open surgery.

Dr. Deepak Varma is a well-known gastro surgeon in Kochi and has been a pioneer in the treatment of a hernia.
